Reporting to Parents

The education of your child is a partnership between the pupil, the school and the parents. We will invite all parents to learning conversations in terms 1 and 3 in which your child will be able to talk about their learning, their goals and their next steps, using their exercise books. In terms 2 and 4 parents will receive a written report. Appointments can be made to discuss these.

Newsletters

Newsletters are an important method of communicating upcoming school and BOT events and activities, and the children’s achievements.

The school newsletter is published every second Thursday and sent home with the eldest member of the family. It also contains items of interest including community events and services, education comments and events as well as articles and other works produced by the students.

School House System

Hangatiki School operates a house system with two houses, Pounamu and Paua. Students work in their house group in various activities and can earn points for their house on a daily basis with a reward system attached.

Book Club & Money

During the year children may purchase books through Scholastic Book Club. Leaflets are sent home, briefly describing the books. Orders should be returned to the school in a named and sealed envelope before the due date. Cheques should be made payable to Scholastic New Zealand.
All money should be sent in a sealed envelope with the child’s name clearly written on.

Stationery

A full selection of the appropriate stationery is available at school. The cost is competitive for all stationery that your child will need to use for his or her work. This includes all exercise books, pens, pencils, erasers and rulers. A charge of $40.00 per student will cover stationery needs for the year. Students should have access to writing equipment at home for homework use.

Use of Grounds

The school grounds are closed to the public, however access may be obtained with permission from the Principal. They are also totally smoke free.

Lost Property

Parents are asked to name all clothing. Unclaimed items are held and displayed at assemblies. At the end of each term the unclaimed items will be given to charity.

Buses

Hangatiki School is serviced by Go Bus Transport Ltd and Dobson Motors Ltd. As well as servicing the Hangatiki District, there is a pick up point in Otorohanga at the corner of Otewa/Old Te Kuiti Roads at 7.50am, with drop off after school at the Fire Station at 4.00pm. The bus also picks up pupils on the Old Te Kuiti Road and Puketawai to Smith Rd corner. The bus service from Te Kuiti picks up children at the lay-by on Te Kumi Road (opposite New World) at 8.00am and drops them off at the Civic Centre after school around 4.00pm. Both these bus services depart school at 3.40pm. There is a small charge for pupils which has been subsidised by the Board of Trustees.

School Sports Uniform

Hangatiki School Sports Uniform is a pair of plain black shorts topped with a teal blue t-shirt/ sweatshirt monogrammed with the school name and emblem. The children are required to wear the uniform at Interschool sports events and on class trips. Sets of school t-shirts are kept at school to be issued to students for each event and handed back in to school afterwards

Sports

Swimming—in the swimming season each child participates in swimming lessons. If for any reason a child cannot swim a signed note is to be written to the teacher. Hangatiki School participates annually in the Otorohanga Combined Schools interschool swimming sports.

Winter Sport - the children have the opportunity to take part in team sports of Netball, Soccer and Rugby in the weekend while representing the school. To ensure full teams the school often combines with children from other schools.

Outdoor Education—This is an important part of our curriculum and all children are given the opportunity to participate in regular and planned activities. These do require input from parents and caregivers and costs are met by fees and fundraising events.

Combined Otorohanga Primary School– Principals also organise special camps and events to cater for other EOTC, sports, arts and curriculum activities throughout the school year.
